space Virginia Panel Corporation’s newest Interface system is the first of its kind, offering a twin interface solution to meet all your needs. It is the first system that allows you to mix and match our pin & socket connectors (from our 90 Series) with direct PCB connection (using our Twin Access Contact– TAC™).One half of the system can be configured with TAC contacts, for a PCB to PCB solution; the other half can be an assortment of pin & socket terminations ranging from power, high frequency (to 40 GHz), pneumatic, fiber optics and others. The user has freedom to mix and match in any combination including a complete PCB to PCB solution or a complete pin & socket solution. Gemini, loaded with TAC modules, takes you directly to a wireless system– a PCB can be designed for both the Receiver and ITA sides. The boards can “grow” vertically above and below the Receiver and ITA frames allowing plenty of room for user-configured connectors. In addition, VPC can help you design your PCB eliminating all of your wiring concerns. Gemini is 18 module slots wide accommodating up to 3420 Signal I/O (using TAC contacts). VPC offers two hinge-down frames, 5U and 9U, that will mount on standard 19″ racks or any type of chassis you application requires (i.e. VXI, PXI). The hinge-down frame allows access to VXI or PXI cards, and when hinged open, the cards can easily be removed.

Rack Mount Receivers:  
 

VPC’s 2100 Series Gemini Receiver is designed to accept a discrete wired interchangeable Test Adapter and/or a Printed Circuit Board. With 18 module positions, the Gemini Receiver is mounted to a Vertical Hinged Mounting Frame for either 5U or 9U chassis. An integrated microswitch that shuts off power when the ITA is disengaged is standard (includes 6′ 24 AWG wire: Red-normally open/Black-common/White-normally closed).

Connector modules can be intermixed using Twin Access Contacts (TACs™) for direct PCB connections or pin and socket contacts for discrete wired terminations. The Receiver side bars are black anodized, while the top and bottom bars are clear anodized.

Vertical Hinged Mounting Frames:

Vertical Hinged Mounting Frames bolt directly onto any 19″ rack and allow the Gemini Receiver to hinge down toward the operator for access to wiring. An incorporated hinge supports the receiver when the system is hinged open. The Vertical Hinged Mounting Frames feature a bar to provide strain relief for wires. Mounting Flanges are required when mounting the Gemini Receiver and Vertical Hinged Mounting Frame directly to the VXI chassis.

Hinged Shelf Mounting Frame:

VPC’s Hinged Shelf Mounting Frame accommodates the Gemini Receiver mounted to a Vertical Hinged Mounting Frame (P/N 310113128). The horizontal configuration enables wiring to extend from under the Receiver Interface to the rack mounted test equipment allowing shorter wire lengths. The hinged design, held open by a locking support hinge, provides easy access to the interface wiring during debugging. Rack mounting hardware is included.

The Gemini Interchangeable Test Adapter (ITA) can accommodate up to 18 connector modules, a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) or a combination of connector modules and a PCB. The ITA can be used in a number of applications to accomplish the required connection to the Unit Under Test (UUT). Finished in clear chromate. A wide range of connector modules are available separately for user configuration.

Enclosures:

VPC provides wiring Enclosures for the Gemini ITA. Made of aluminum, the Enclosure body is painted gray and features a hinged cover plate with quarter turn hardware that provides easy access to the ITAs wiring. The Enclosure is secured to the ITA by eight #4 socket head cap screws (included with enclosure). Handles are integrated for easy removal of the TPS from the Receiver.

Fixturing:

VPC’s fixturing options include the ITA with removable cover and integration with a fixture box. This allows you to customize a solution to fit unique applications. Also available is a fixture box with an adjustable edge card adapter that can accommodate various size cards.

Connector Modules for PCB Termination:

TAC Connector Modules are available in four configurations – 380 pin Signal, 228 pin Signal/12 pin Coaxial/Power, 46 pin Coaxial (50 OHM)/Power, or 180 pin Signal/10 pin Coaxial (75 OHM). Receiver and ITA Wiring Modules loaded with Wiring Contacts are necessary when discrete wiring TACs. All modules are made from an engineered resin to exceed MIL-T-28800 Class 3 operational temperature requirements, with operating temperatures ranging from -10°C to 115°C. TAC Modules include a removable contact retaining plate and all modules include mounting hardware. The TAC Reciever Module is available either with or without a contact protective cover. Receiver Module faces are screened with a white checkerboard pattern and all modules are screened with white nomenclature. Contacts are sold separately.

TAC/PCB Interfaces:

The Signal TAC/PCB and Hybrid TAC/PCB Interface offers mass termination for quick connection of signal, coaxial and power contacts. The double ended TAC contact mates directly to pads on one side of the TAC/PCB Interface. the other side of the interface board is loaded with DIN connectors or any connector on .100″ centers. Please consult factory for additional configurations.

Twin Access Contacts:

Virginia Panel Corporation’s patented Twin Access Contact (TAC™) is designed to mate directly with a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) on both sides of the contact. The TAC features double-ended wiping action that will not damage the contact pads on the PCB. TAC can mate directly to a PCB or be discrete wired using wiring contacts. VPC offers Signal, Coaxial 50 OHM, Coaxial 75 OHM and Power TAC. The maximum contact force of the Signal TAC is 2 ounces, enabling the user to fully load the modules, yet easily engage and disengage the interface. The Receiver Coaxial TAC features the same double-ended wiping action as the Signal TAC and is available with impedance of 50 OHMs and 75 OHMs. The Receiver Power TAC also features the double-ended wiping action and is rated at 20 Amps.

Wiring Contacts & Patchcords:

Wiring Contacts are used to discrete wire TAC Contacts. Available in Signal, Coaxial and Power, the Wiring Contacts are used in ITA and/or Receiver Wiring Modules. Patchcords use stranded wire unless otherwise noted.

There are 2 types of 50 OHM Coaxial Wiring contacts available— Solder Sleeve® for wire termination and SMB connection. The durable and economical Solder Sleeve is made of heat-shrinkable thermoplastic. The sleeve contains a fluxed solder pre-form which provides the exact amount of solder and flux required to connect coaxial wire to the contact. The Solder Sleeve’s one-piece, pre-assembled design make application as easy as stripping the wire, inserting it and heating the contact. After shrinking, the sleeve acts as an insulator and provides strain relief for the solder joint. Connection errors are reduced by the use of a specially designed holding fixture and pre-designated location for heat application. The 75 OHM Coaxial Wiring contact is terminated with standard SMB connectors.

Hybrid Module 16/16 Signal/Power or Coax 32 Pin

Virginia Panel Corporation now offers a Signal/Power hybrid module for our 90 Series Receivers and ITAs. The hybrid Module allows for 10 Power and 16 Sense lines in the same module position. Both the Receiver and ITA Module are made from g-10, withstanding temperatures of 115 C. Nomenclature on the Signal/Power module is silk-screened white onto the Modules. The receiver modules are two piece modules (includes a lead-in module cap).

Signal Module 64 Pin

The 64 Pin Signal Modules are made from Ryton R-7, withstanding temperatures up to 220°C. The 64 Pin Signal ITA Module is made from an engineered resin and will withstand temperatures up to 159°C. Both the ITA and Receiver Modules have molded nomenclature and include mounting hardware.

Signal Module 96 Pin

The 96 Pin Signal Modules are made from Ryton R-7, withstanding temperatures up to 220°C. Nomenclature is molded on the Module and mounting hardware is included.

The 192 Pin Signal Modules are made from LCP – Liquid Crystal Polymer Resin, withstanding temperatures up to 260°C. Nomenclature is molded on the Module and mounting hardware is included.

The 19 Pin Mini Power and Mini Coaxial Modules are made from Ryton R-7, withstanding temperatures up to 220°C. The 76 Pin Mini Coaxial Modules are made from G-10, withstanding temperatures of 110°C. The receiver modules are two piece modules (includes a lead-in module cap). Power Modules faces are screened red.

20 GHz Modules

The 32 Pin 20 GHz Coaxial ITA and Receiver ITA and Receiver Modules are made from G-10, withstanding temperatures of 115°C. Nomenclature if silk screened white onto the Module.

40 GHz Modules

The 8 pin 40 GHz Coaxial ITA and Receiver Modules are made from Aluminum, clear chromated and withstand temperatures of 115ºC. Nomenclature is silk screened onto the Module.

Pneumatic Modules

VPC offers two types of Pneumatic Modules. One is designed for larger diameter (3/8″ ID) pneumatic connectors, with positions for 5 panel mount pneumatic/vacuum connectors and occupying 2 module positions in the Receiver. The other Pneumatic Module is designed for smaller diameter (1/8″ ID) pneumatic connectors, with positions for 10 panel mount pneumatic/vacuum connectors and occupying 1 module position.

Fiber Optic Modules – 14 Pin

Virginia Panel offers Fiber Optics Modules and Patchcords used in our 90 Series and Gemini Receivers and Interchangeable Test Adapters (ITAs). Both the Receiver and ITA Modules are made of aluminum with nickel plating. The modules have 14 contact positions and include a protective dust cover for the fiber optic termini. The Fiber Optics termini have an insertion loss of 0.5 dB typical, a return loss of -35 dB and an engagement force of 1.5 lbs. per contact. The fiber optics termini is hermaphroditic, however, the Receiver Patchcord Assembly includes an alignment sleeve necessary for aligning the termini in the module. A cleaning kit and removal tool are available.

Cable Assemblies

For VXI applications using discrete wiring terminations, Virginia Panel offers Cable Assemblies terminated on one end with connectors that mate on the VXI card and on the other with VPC connector modules. Virginia Panel manufactures cable assemblies for over 500 VXI cards, please Contact_us for more information. Cable Assemblies offer:

  • 20, 30 and 48 inch lengths.
  • Longer wire lengths allowing the Receiver
  • to be placed wherever needed on the rack
  • providing direct access to the VXI chassis.
  • An “open” structure, allowing Cable Assemblies to be used with any size VXI card, and therefore,on any size chasis.
